What is Pickleball? A Beginner's Guide for Hong Kong Players

If you've walked past a sports hall recently and heard the satisfying pop of a plastic ball hitting a paddle, you've probably witnessed pickleball in action. One of the world's fastest-growing sports has finally arrived in Hong Kong — and if you haven't tried it yet, you're missing out.
What Exactly is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It's played on a court about a quarter the size of a tennis court, using a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball. Games can be played as singles or doubles and are typically played to 11 points.
The sport was invented in 1965 in the United States and has since grown to over 36 million players worldwide. In Hong Kong, the pickleball community has exploded over the past two years — players love that it's easier to learn than tennis, gentler on the body than squash, and far more social than most racket sports.
The Basic Rules
The serve must be made underhand with the paddle below the waist. Only the serving side can score points, and games are played to 11 (win by 2). The 7-foot zone on either side of the net is called the kitchen — you cannot volley while standing in it. After the serve, both teams must let the ball bounce once before volleying freely.
What Equipment Do You Need?
Getting started is affordable. You'll need a pickleball paddle (beginner paddles start from HK$200–500), court shoes, and pickleballs. At Pickle Human, balls are provided with every court rental — all you need is your paddle.
Why Hong Kong Players Love It
Hong Kong's fast-paced lifestyle makes pickleball a perfect fit. A competitive game takes just 30–45 minutes, courts are compact, and the social element is huge. Whether you're a retiree, a busy professional, or a family, pickleball welcomes everyone.
